survival kits

I love collecting knives. Two of my favorite knives are Swiss made jungle knife with survival kits built in the case and inside the knife handle. They are made with ten inch steel serrated blades and perfectly balance for throwing. There is a built in compass in the handle. I bring one knife when I go mountain climbing or any outdoor activity.

The survival kits built in my knives contain hooks and nylon for fishing. It also contains water proof matches and magnifying glass for cooking. It also has band aids and antiseptic for wounds. Luckily enough, I never had to use my emergency survival kit. Nevertheless, I love these knives. It makes me feel secure every time I’m outdoors in nature.

aviation ELT

Traveling by plane is now a safe mode of transportation. Still, accidents happen no matter how few and far between. That is why every aircraft needs to have an aviation ELT or emergency location transmitter in case of accidents. ELTs transmit signals on internationally recognized distress frequencies. The 406 MHz signal is monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center in the US.

If an ELT sends out a GPS location that is received by the geostationary satellites, search and rescue teams are often dispatched within minutes, depending on your location and the available resources. If the ELT has no GPS location information, it must wait to be received from the satellite’s Doppler location mechanism which may take up to 45 to 90 minutes in the US.

water storage barrels

During disaster, water supply is also usually interrupted. That is why it is also better to prepare for this. Make sure you have enough supply of water at home. Get your home some water storage barrels to ensure you have more than enough that could help you survive for days. When buying one, choose the long-lasting barrels not to mention their clean features for safe and potable water storage.

Water storage barrels that are available in the market are of different sizes according to its user’s need. There are big barrels for ample supply, and there are not-so-big drums for short-time storage. Most containers available for sale are durable too. You can use them for years without its quality diminishing. It is important that the storage you buy is the one with cover to make sure your water is safe and cleanly secured.

telescopic steel batons

Being of Filipino heritage, my dad taught me to use Arnis at an early age. He bought me rattan sticks and we would practice stick fighting for hours. He also would teach me knife fighting. I started collecting weapons for fun and for training. My collection includes a butterfly knife, a kris sword, couple of fighting sticks and three telescopic steel batons.

My telescopic steel batons are the crème ala crème of my collection. It is very lightweight weighing close to my rattan stick. It is 29 inches when fully extended and only ten inches in its contracted state. I keep one in the car and one in the house. I can perform all my escrima scrimmages with it.

emergency lights

I am used to blackouts. I lived in a third world country and power outrages are nothing new. We got so used to blackouts so we make sure to always have emergency lights on hand. We have them in our apartment building, in the hallways and in the lobby. Each apartment had them. They turned on immediately after the lights went out.

Some other forms of emergency lights are handy flash lights. There are all kinds of flash lights; the most popular ones are those that have batteries. There are also emergency lights that you can plug to the wall when there is electricity and when there is none, the batteries are used. The batteries are actually being charged when they are plugged to the wall. When all of these fails, you can always use candles. Good thing candles nowadays are scented and come in several sizes – they can even last for days.

wireless nanny cam

More and more families are choosing to spy on their child’s care provider. They usually install a wireless nanny cam in their child’s room for their own peace of mind. You can’t blame parents from being too careful these days. With higher crime rates, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

There is a wide variety of spy cameras available in the market today. Most are easily hidden in almost any type of household item. Prices vary from about $100 to more than $500 dollars depending on the features offered. Some can even send video images live to your computer or cell phone.

Stun guns

Criminals are confident of committing crimes when they think their victims are helpless. Don’t be part of the statistics. Bring along your own stun gun when passing through dark areas or entering a deserted vacant lot at night. Stun guns are now easily concealable and virtually undetectable in the hand of a man or woman.

These protective gadgets are available in many designs, some even look like ordinary gizmos like cell phones and flashlights. What your attacker will not even notice can render him helpless and squirming on the floor. Order a stun gun today and make it your invisible protection.

steel batons

Members of law enforcement forces undergo several trainings on self-defense, and first-aid techniques before they are immersed to actual operations. Besides self-defense workshops, law enforcers are also oriented on the proper usage of less lethal weapons like stun guns, tasers, expandable or telescopic steel batons and related weapons. Although they are well-trained to guns and ammunitions, both the military and the police force are adapting the use of less lethal weapons to lessen casualties and avoid fatalities in their operations.

Even though there are still controversies and criticisms regarding the use of less lethal weapons particularly the tasers it became an alternative for the police force and the military force in their covert or tactical operations. Other less lethal weapons used include firearm rounds, paintball guns, dart guns, tear gas, pepper sprays, skunk (scent-based weapon) and the controversial electroshock weapons commonly known for its brand Taser.

personal attack alarms

When my eldest turned high school, I always remind her to be alert and cautious of her surroundings. She leaves the house 5:30 a.m. and commutes for an hour via public transportation to get to school then gets home at 5:30 p.m. With this daily schedule I thought of enrolling her to a self-defense class like taekwondo or karatedo for added protection. However, when I consulted this idea to my husband he shrugged it off and suggested that I buy personal attack alarms instead to protect our two daughters.

Since I don’t have any idea what it was I immediately surf the net to learn more about personal attack alarm. After reading the benefits of this handy gadget I appreciate its advantages over self-defense workshops. Apparently personal attack alarms are effective to avoiding assailants since it gives off a distress-signal when activated. This loud sound has about 130 decibels, much louder than car horns (120 decibels), it can surely attract attention from other people who can come to your rescue.

door alarm

One of my bad habits is smoking. It’s getting harder and harder for us smokers to find a place to smoke. Gone are the days when I can pull out my cigarette in a meeting and just puff away. Now, I have to go to the emergency stairway of our building to smoke. Even that is gone now. Recently our building administrator installed a door alarm in the emergency exit.

Trying to bypass a simple door alarm is not easy. I tried opening the door ever so slowly only to be met by a shrieking sound that sent me running like hell. After that incident I needed a smoke really bad. The supervisor of our building went to our office to find out who triggered the alarm. Fortunately no one had seen me, by the time the supervisor asked our office, I was already in the nearby café smoking.
